All I can say is wow (in a shocking way)! Last night’s Private Practice left me with chills, and it doesn’t surprise me that it was written by Shonda Rhimes, the Grey’s Anatomy extraordinaire from which this show spun-off from.
The 7th episode in Season 4 of Private Practice entitled “Did You Hear What Happened to Charlotte King” deals with the aftermath of Charlotte’s attack which happened at the end of Episode 6th’s “All in the Family.”
This has been the best Season of Private Practice to date; filled with tremendous storylines in its early going. But before I continue, I must warn any parents who watch this show with teens or younger kids: please be advised; this week’s episode deals rather darkly with a subject matter that is not for their age group. Seeing the Episode Promos from ABC (which I’ve included at the end of this article), and you’ll understand why.
It’d be a disservice to you if I reveal what happened, so I won’t. What I will tell you is that KaDee Strickland really outdid herself in last night’s performance, really Emmy worthy. Strickland did her research prior to filming by getting in touch with Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network (RAINN), and it showed. She also spent time at a rape treatment center in Los Angeles, where she was confronted with patients undergoing professional medical help to recover from the ordeal.
She truly raised awareness and brought to the forefront what the victims who survive these horrific ordeals go through in recovery, both physically and mentally. Private Practice decided to do much of the show from the victims POV, rather than that of her cast mates or the police. They’ll also make sure to not take lightly her character’s evolution from this, saying that she’ll never be the same for the rest of the show’s run. Grey’s Anatomy also took a similar route after the mass-killing-spree at Seattle Grace Hospital in Season 6’s “Death and All His Friends.”
What’s your take on not only this episode, but how they tackled this issue, and how they (Private Practice) dealt with the aftermath of the attack?
